The modern cooperative community has evolved into a rich professional resource. Since its inception, SCCM has tapped into that community for professional guidance in its development. There are many organizations, such as Food Cooperative Consulting and the California Center for Cooperative Development, to assist SCCM with a wealth of advice and guidance. A local food co-op, Ocean Beach People’s Food Co-op in San Diego, has been instrumental in guiding SCCM in this process through mentoring. There are currently 26,000 and-counting consumer cooperatives in the US alone, all supportive and willing to assist SCCM become a successful component of this community. Cooperatives are built by people to help each other meet their common needs. This way of doing business is not only a cooperative principle, it’s what can turn a town into a true and vibrant village.
